Early Black American Music

This presentation was used in my first lecture for Music of the African Diaspora, an elective course I co-created and co-taught with Mr. Kurt Russell. The class used African-American music as a vehicle for teaching American history.

Roots Music in the Orchestra Classroom

I was asked to talk about how I was attempting to incorporate Roots Music in my orchestra classrooms. This is an outline of what Roots Music is, why it is revelant to strings instruction, and sample ideas of how to approach it in the classroom.

How to Read Music Review

I created this worksheet for my 6th graders at the beginning of the year as a review activity.

Clef Helpers

I noticed that some students in my middle school ensembles were struggling to remember the names of the notes on the clef, so I created this helper and give one to every student.

Sonata Allegro Form Diagram

I made this graphic to teach my high school ensemble about sonata allegro form when we were learning a piece by Haydn for OMEA State Large Group Contest. Teaching the form of the piece helped the students understand how the work moved and aided in learning it more quickly because they could hear the similarities of the sections. It also allowed us to be thoughtful about phrasing throughout the piece. See the Haydn lesson plan for more details.
