Orchestra RISE

R.I.S.E

These signs hang in my middle school classroom. At the beginning of the year, I spend a few days reviewing and updating the norms and consequences for the classroom. I do this with student input and class discussion so that we all know and understand what is expected.

My handbook overviews the Orchestra Program and is shared with students via hardcopy and access in Google Classroom. Parents also receive a copy sent to them via Remind.

IB Music Diploma Program Notes -

Impressionism

I co-taught an IB Music DP class and I created this presentation to use during my lecture on Impressionism.

Early Black American Music

Early Black American Music

This presentation was used in my first lecture for Music of the African Diaspora, an elective course I co-created and co-taught with Mr. Kurt Russell. The class used African-American music as a vehicle for teaching American history.

Roots Music in the Orchestra Classroom

Roots Music in the Orchestra Classroom

I was asked to talk about how I was attempting to incorporate Roots Music in my orchestra classrooms. This is an outline of what Roots Music is, why it is revelant to strings instruction, and sample ideas of how to approach it in the classroom.

How to read music - Musical Symbols.pdf

How to Read Music Review

I created this worksheet for my 6th graders at the beginning of the year as a review activity.

Clef Helpers.pdf

Clef Helpers

I noticed that some students in my middle school ensembles were struggling to remember the names of the notes on the clef, so I created this helper and give one to every student.

Sonata Allegro Form Diagram.pptx

Sonata Allegro Form Diagram

I made this graphic to teach my high school ensemble about sonata allegro form when we were learning a piece by Haydn for OMEA State Large Group Contest. Teaching the form of the piece helped the students understand how the work moved and aided in learning it more quickly because they could hear the similarities of the sections. It also allowed us to be thoughtful about phrasing throughout the piece. See the Haydn lesson plan for more details.

Orchestra Apps

Orchestra Apps

I made this handy document to help parents and students access online resources at the beginning of the Covid-19 Pandemic.

Regina Carter Graphic Organizer

Regina Carter Graphic Organizer

This was another pandemic lesson. Not having concerts to prepare for allowed me and my students to explore music genres outside of our personal contexts. I created this graphic organizer as page in our hybrid digital journal.

Digital Holiday Cards

Another Pandemic Project! Despite my best attempts, teaching high school orchestra online was difficult for everyone. We hit a wall around the holidays because we weren't able to put on a concert. So with the help of a grant that I helped students write, we used Soundtrap to record carols in chamber groups. Students learned how to record with a click track and listen to play back and make decisions about re-recording or editing. The project also highlighted the imporance of playing in tune and using a metronome to practice. More students downloaded tuner and metronome apps during that project! Once we had our MP3s, I taught the students how to make digital holiday cards in Canva. Then we uploaded the MP3s to the digital cards. I hyperlinked each card to a shared document that was shared with the local nursing homes in Oberlin.

I had the honor of presenting for the first time at a professional development session for my Oberlin colleagues.

Decolonizing the Music Classroom

After attending a wonderful symposium hosted by Decolonizing the Music Room, a non-profit organization that strives for diversity and equity in music education, I was asked to present what I learned at a staff meeting. The presentation was so well-received that I shared it with my music colleagues.
